The Iceberg Trail

As you probably already know, most tourists come to our remote area in northern Newfoundland because they want to see the place where the Vikings were the first Europeans to set foot on the North American continent around 1000 years ago. They visit the museum in L’Anse aux Meadows, the official National Historic Site, where you can take guided tours. Or they go to Norstead, about two kilometers away. Norstead is a recreated Viking harbor with several repicla buildings where locals dress up as Vikings and tell about life a thousand years ago.

David and Carol are two of the reenactors, Carol also reads runes for tourists, David offers carvings. Numerous cruise ships land in L’Anse aux Meadows and then hundreds of visitors swarm out to learn more about the Vikings in Canada.

However, there is now another great attraction in our area: the Iceberg Trail. This is a well-built path along the coast from which you have a breathtaking view of the ocean, islands, cliffs, the tundra, small fishing villages and beautiful bays.

Over the past four years, new legs of the trail have been built, and I’m thrilled. The trail takes you to stretches of coastline that were previously difficult to access. Sometimes I can’t believe my luck that this trail isn’t far from Noddy Bay, where I live. One of the stages starts right behind my house.

This summer, the workers completed a new leg, which of course I had to hike immediately. Building such a path is hard work, but one that is worth it. On foot you can see so much more of the landscape than from the car.

Sometimes I can persuade my favorite fisherman to come with me if he can’t go out on the ocean because it’s too windy. Or I go with a friend, or with the neighbor’s dog, who of course so loves to come along.

P.S. My new Calista Gates crime novel Deep Death will be published on November 1!! You can pre-order it now on Amazon. (If you want to be the first to receive such news, then sign up for my “Bernadette’s Letter” on the homepage of this website. Just scroll down and press the e-mail button.)
